Descent is a 3D first person shooter video game developed by Parallax Software and published by Interplay in Europe in 1995. The game offers six degrees of freedom, followed by several expansion packages and a 1996 port for the PlayStation. Ports were also announced for the Sega Saturn and Panasonic M2, but these were later canceled. The game takes place in the solar system, where the player is cast as Material Defender, a mercenary hired by the PTMC. Descent spawned two direct sequels: Descent II in 1996 and Descent 3 in 1999. In June 2016, a spiritual sequel called Overlord was funded on Kickstarter, which raised $ 306,537 through crowdfunding to bring Descent back to PC bring, and was lit green on Steam. On April 10, 2015, a prequel titled Descent: Underground was successfully funded on Kickstarter, which raised over $ 600,000 through crowdfunding to bring Descent back to PC with the release expected in 2016. On March 12, 2016, Matt Toschlog and Mike Kulas (designers of The Original Descent Games) successfully funded Overload on Kickstarter, calling it the “spiritual successor” to the Descent series. The game was developed and will be released in 2017. By December 2015, Descent had been withdrawn from GOG.com and Steam due to a dispute between Parallax Software and publisher Interplay. .
