Curse of the Dead Gods — 7 gameplay tips for the monster-slaying roguelike, out tomorrow – PlayStation.Blog

Hello explorers! Everyone here at Passtech Games is absolutely thrilled to launch Curse of the Dead Gods on PlayStation 4 tomorrow! We know our soul-spoiling, trap-avoiding, monster-killing roguelite can be challenging. That’s why we’ve put together these seven essential tips to help you take your first steps into the twisted darkness of the temple.

Seek the light

The walls of the temple twist under the shadow of your trusty torch. Most of the areas that you traverse in Curse of the Dead Gods are filled with groups of enemies and traps hiding in the dark. So, look for sources of light or create your own by setting braziers, cobwebs, or even enemies on fire before using your equip your weapons to fight. Remember, if you fight in the dark, you will take more damage with each attack. The icon in the lower center of your screen indicates whether you are fighting in the light or in the dark.

Discover your surroundings

Exploration is the key to a successful run at Curse, despite the many dangers lurking in the shadows. Maximize the amount of gold, weapons and mystical relics you can find by searching everywhere and looking for hidden rooms. The risk is always worth the reward.

Playing with traps

Traps can be deadly, but they also kill enemies. Scour your surroundings to see what’s available, then slide creatures into spikes and streams of poison, lure them near a flame-breathing statue, or find other ways to use your surroundings. There are many ways to be creative in combat.

Manage your stamina

If you’ve played a lot of action role-playing games, you will be familiar with the stamina mechanics. Small white pips under your character represent your stamina, and management is key to survival. Endurance is affected by combo finishers, ranged attacks, two-handed attacks, and dodging. Balance off attack and defense and keep some stamina in reserve. Otherwise, you may not be able to avoid damage at a crucial moment. Perfectly coordinated dodging restores stamina, and weapons and relics are hidden throughout the temple that can also empower them.

Practice your parade

The parade is an extremely effective combat tool for those who can master it. While an enemy strikes, tap the parry button to deflect their attack, stagger them, and weaken their defenses. It even works on projectile attacks, costs no stamina, and restores two stamina on success. Timing can be tricky, but practice whatever attack patterns you know on enemies or equip a shield to enlarge the window a parade will succeed in.

Manage your corruption

Before the temple takes your life, it could take your soul. The purple curse bar at the bottom right of your screen is your damage. If you take damage from certain attacks, offer your blood to a shrine instead of gold for bonuses, or when you enter a new room, your soul will be corrupted: Reach 100 corruption and you will be given a random curse. Many curses are a double-edged sword that changes some game mechanics. For example, a curse will make enemies explode on death: this forces you to be more careful, but you can also use the explosion to start a chain reaction on the enemies. It is up to you to be killed or saved by your lust for power: the more corrupt you get, the more you will find powerful cursed weapons and relics … But reach five curses and your life will slowly be exhausted. You can remove one of your curses by defeating a champion, but that can only delay the inevitable …

Unlock blessings and weapons

If you die in the curse of the dead gods, you will lose all the weapons, relics, and gold that you carried. Fortunately, you keep treasures like jade rings and crystal skulls that you collected in one run. Crystal skulls can be exchanged for permanent, powerful blessings that provide useful bonuses and effects. You can use them to create your own build with great synergies. So experiment to find new powerful combinations. Jade rings are used to unlock new weapons that you may find as you explore the temple. Look for treasure chests in every dark corner to find your new weapons.

We hope these tips serve you well, explorers. We believe you are ready to face the depths of the temple. So grab your torch and gun and take the plunge. The gods of wonder await you …
