Valheim has a first-person mod, and it works pretty darn well

While Valheim doesn’t officially support mods, modders don’t let that slow them down. There’s already a mod out there that revamped the construction system, so it was probably only a matter of time before someone revamped your Viking’s perspective. Yes, there is now a mod for Valheim that you can use to play in Ego mode.

And while the First Person View mod is still in the works, and the game itself doesn’t look like it’s a natural fit, it really works surprisingly well. I walked around in first person for about half an hour this morning, and the beautiful world looks even better when you look through your character’s eyes instead of looking over their shoulders. Here’s a little montage:

The fight is definitely a bit tricky – blocking with a shield gives you a nice view of the inside of your shield and nothing else, and it’s hard to see how you’re actually brandishing your weapon. Generally speaking, moving around and looking around makes you cut your own body a bit, but first person sailing is definitely pretty cute.

The really nice thing about the mod is that you are not locked in ego mode. With the mod installed, you can use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out from third person mode to first person. So if you are struggling, you can easily get back to the POV of the vanilla game.

The First Person View Mod is dependent on another mod called BepInExPack Valheim, but don’t let that put you off as it’s an easy install. Once you’ve installed it and run the game once, it will create a plugins folder that the First Person View mod can easily be dropped into. Both mods have readme files that explain exactly how to get the mods working. The First Person View mod also includes a new configuration file that allows you to set values for the field of view in both the first and the third Person and the font size of damage notifications. You can find it here at Nexus Mods.
